Gin Lovers, Portugal – ein Gespräch mit Paulo Goncalves

In Portugal haben Wein und insbesondere Portwein eine lange Tradition. Interessanterweise ist Portugal seit kurzem auch ein Gin Land, in dem mehr und mehr Bars ein breites Angebot an Gins bereit stellen und lokale Gins zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen. Einige dieser Gins stehen in den Startlöchern, um weitere europäische Länder zu erobern, einige von ihnen vielleicht sogar die Welt.  [Find english Version below]

Über Gin Lovers

Für unser Interview traf ich mich mit Paulo Goncalves, der in diesem Jahr zum CEO von Gin Lover ernannt wurde, im Gin Lovers & Less – Bar & Restaurant in der Principe Real Gegend im Herzen von Lissabon. Das Time Out Magazin hat kürzlich diese Gegend zur fünft coolsten Nachbarschaft in der Welt ernannt und ich kann voll und ganz verstehen warum. Die Gegend um Principe Real ist in der Tat besonders und wirklich hip und somit prädestiniert dafür, die perfekte Lokation für eine Bar wie das Gin Lovers & Less zu sein. Diese Bar, die sich in einem Gebäude mit einem großen offenen Platz befindet und von einmaliger Architektur und kleineren Geschäften umgeben ist, ist in der Tat ein echter Hingucker. Das Gin Lovers & Less hat ein sehr breites Angebot an internationalen Gins, in der Karte befinden sich aber auch einige interessante lokale portugiesische Gins. „Gin Lovers“ ist allerdings nicht nur einfach eine Bar. Angefangen hat alles mit dem „Gin Lovers Projekt“ irgendwann zwischen 2012 und 2013. Einer der Hauptinitiatoren war Carlos Alves, allerdings war es nie das Unterfangen einer einzelnen Person, sondern vielmehr ein Gruppenprojekt. Aktuell besteht Gin Lovers aus sechs Partnern – alles natürlich Gin Liebhaber. Einer der entscheidenden Startpunkte war vielleicht die Initiierung des sogenannten „nationalen Gin und Tonic Tages“, welcher jedes Jahr seit 2013 im Juni gefeiert wird. Dieses war auch die Motivation um Gin Lovers als Unternehmen zu starten. Heute ist Gin Lovers nicht nur eine registrierte Marke, sondern steht für eine Vielzahl von „Gin-Aktivitäten“ insbesondere in der Gegend von Lissabon. Dieses umfasst Gin Workshops und Gin Weiterbildungen, das Veröffentlichen von Gin Büchern und Magazinen, das Gin Lovers & Less Bar & Restaurant, zwei Bars im Einkaufszentrum von El Corte Inglés in Lissabon und nicht zu guter Letzt die Herstellung und der Vertrieb der zwei eigenen Gins – den Lisboa Gin und den Gin Lovers Gin. Dieses war für omoxx Grund genug mit Paulo Goncalves, dem aktuellen CEO von Gin Lovers über den „Wacholderbrand-Hype“, Gin Lovers Aktivitäten sowie ihre Zukunftspläne zu sprechen. Doc Joerg RG: Paulo, warum liebst du Gin und was Gin für dich so besonders? Paulo Goncalves: Ich habe anderthalb Jahren angefangen Gin zu lieben. Davor habe ich ihn öfter probiert, war aber nie so angetan von ihm. Eigentlich hat meine Leidenschaft für Gin in dieser Bar begonnen, weil die Bartender hier Gin und Gin Tonics anders servieren. Für mich war dies ein echter „Wow-Effekt“ und eine Erfahrung, die ich vorher noch nie hatte. Es ist etwas schwierig für mich zu erklären aber hier werden die Sachen einfach mit Liebe gemacht. Doc Joerg RG: Glaubst du Portugiesen haben ein größeres Faible für Gin als andere Nationen? Ist Gin vielleicht sogar schon ein Nationalgetränk? Paulo Goncalves: Gin könnte ein neues Geschäftsmodell in Portugal sein. Heutzutage versuchen einige Leute in Portugal Gin herzustellen – einige aus reinem Geschäftsinteresse und andere weil sie Gin einfach lieben. Portugiesen sind sehr kreativ; wenn sie eine Möglichkeit erkennen ergreifen sie sie. Doc Joerg RG: Da wir ein deutsches Food und Bar Magazin sind gibt es natürlich eine brennende Frage für uns. Wann werden der Lisboa Gin und der Gin Lovers Gin in Deutschland erhältlich sein? Paulo Goncalves: Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass ich diese Frage gestellt bekomme. Viele Leute würden Gin Lovers Gin gerne auch in Deutschland oder auch in Frankreich, UK oder anderen europäischen Ländern erwerben und trinken können. Ich glaube, dass es grundsätzlich möglich ist und eines Tages wird es auch passieren. Dieses Jahr hat unser Unternehmen viele Veränderungen vorgenommen, um weiter erfolgreich sein sowie expandieren zu können und wir haben den Markt analysiert. Für das nächste Jahr könnt ihr also einige Überraschungen erwarten. Doc Joerg RG: Und in zwei Jahren wird Gin Lovers global agieren…? Paulo Goncalves: Schauen wir mal, was passiert. Doc Joerg RG: Da wir einige deutsche Gin-Liebhaber und Gin-Verkaufs-Kanäle gut kennen, können wir hier auch gerne unterstützen – gerade auch weil eure Gins so außergewöhnlich sind und sie es verdienen, auch In Deutschland erhältlich zu sein. Paulo Goncalves: Ok, vielen Dank und ja, ein wenig Unterstützung wäre hoch willkommen. Aber wie seid ihr eigentlich auf Gin Lovers gestoßen? Doc Joerg RG: Als Food und Bar Magazin sind wir seit einiger Zeit sehr aktiv im Gin-Bereich und wir haben angefangen euch auf Instagram zu folgen, da ihr interessante Posts und nette Stories hattet. Darüber hinaus folgt euch sogar Aviation Gin – das Unternehmen von Ryan Reynolds – und da habe ich mir gedacht, dass wir das sogar noch besser können…mit einem spannenden Interview. Wir haben eure Bar vor drei Tagen besucht und eure beiden Gins probiert…und haben uns sofort verliebt. Doc Joerg RG: Principe Real (Royal Prince) wurde kürzlich (vom Time Out Magazin) als fünft coolste Nachbarschaft in der Welt ausgezeichnet. Hat das auch Auswirkungen auf euch, ich meine auf Gin Lovers und die schöne Bar, in der wir uns gerade befinden? Paulo Goncalves: Ich glaube Principe Real ist eine sehr schöne Gegend. Aber nicht nur die Gegend ist schön, sondern auch dieses Gebäude mit seinem besonderen Charakter. Und auch das hat Gin Lovers geholfen, zu wachsen und bekannt zu werden. Die Leute kommen natürlich nicht nur für den Gin, sondern auch für diesen Ort, der so besonders ist. Doc Joerg RG: Gin Lovers besteht aus sechs Partnern. Wie entscheidet ihr was als nächstes passiert und wer ist der Entscheidungsträger? Paulo Goncalves: Ja, wir sind sechs Partner und ich bin aktuell der Geschäftsführer des Unternehmens. Und weil Carlos Alves sehr beschäftigt ist aber alle Partner wollen, dass wir weiter wachsen, wurde ich gefragt mitzumachen. Die meisten Entscheidungen werden von Juan Suarez und mir getroffen. Alle Gin Lovers Partner haben das gleiche Ziel, zu wachsen und erfolgreich zu sein und dementsprechend vertrauen sie uns. Man sieht, es ist nicht so kompliziert. Doc Joe RG: Carlos, darf ich dich nach deinem Hintergrund fragen? Kommst du von einem Unternehmen aus der Getränkebranche? Paulo Goncalves: Nein, ich habe ein weiteres Unternehmen, welches nichts mit Gin oder Getränken zu tun hat. Manchmal ist es gut, wenn man unterschiedliche Perspektiven und Erfahrungen mitbringt, um den Tunnelblick zu vermeiden. Das kann sehr hilfreich für die Leute und die Angestellten sein, mit denen man es zu tun hat. Doc Joerg RG: Was kommt als nächstes und was können wir von Gin Lovers in den nächsten Monaten und im Jahr 2019 erwarten? Gibt es etwas, was du schon mit unseren Lesern und uns teilen kannst? Paulo Goncalves: Nächstes Jahr wollen wir zwei weitere Bars in Portugal eröffnen – wahrscheinlich eine in Porto und eine weitere in Coimbra oder in der Nähe dieser Städte. Dort gibt es viel Tourismus und wir wissen, dass die Leute, die dort Leben oder zu Besuch kommen Gin mögen. Also wollen wir dort in 2019 aktiv werden. Und natürlich werden wir versuchen, noch mehr Events und Partys zu veranstalten, so dass Gin Lovers noch bekannter wird.     In Portugal, the two beverages wine and especially port wine have a long tradition. Interestingly Portugal has recently also become a gin country, with more and more bars offering a broader range of gins, where even the local gins are gaining momentum. These Portuguese gins are waiting in the wings ready to expand to other European countries, some of them even ready to conquer the world. One of the most interesting gin companies in Portugal is Gin Lovers – with more to offer than just gin. During a recent trip to Lisbon, we had the opportunity for an interesting interview with the CEO of Gin Lovers. About Gin Lovers For our interview, I met Paulo Goncalves, who has been appointed CEO of Gin Lovers this year, in the Gin Lovers & Less – Bar & Restaurant in the area Principe Real in the center of Lisbon. Time Out magazine recently declared this area to be the fifth coolest neighborhood in the world and I definitely understand why. The whole Principe Real district is a really hip and special area, making it the perfect location for a bar such as of the Gin Lovers & Less. Located in a building in a big open area surrounded by a unique architecture and many small shops, this bar and restaurant is a real eye-catcher. The bar itself has a very broad and global range of gins but of course the drinking menu offers local Portuguese gins as well. However, „Gin Lovers” is not just a bar. Actually, it all started as the „Gin Lovers project” somewhere between 2012 and 2013. One of the main initiators was Carlos Alves, but it was never a single person venture, but rather a group project – currently a total of six partners– all gin lovers. Maybe one of the crucial starting points of Gin Lovers was the creation of the so-called „National Gin and Tonic day”, which has been celebrated every year in June since 2013. This was also the motivation to start the Gin Lovers Company. Today Gin Lovers is not only a registered (trade)mark but also represents many Gin activities especially in the Lisbon area. This includes Gin workshops and the courses about Gin, the publishing of gin books and magazines, the Gin Lovers & Less Bar & Restaurant, two bars at the shopping mall of El Corte Inglés in Lisbon and last but not least, the creation of two in-house gins – the Lisboa Gin and the Gin Lovers Gin. Reason enough for omoxx to talk with Paulo Goncalves, the current CEO of Gin Lovers, about the „juniper distillate hype”, Gin Lovers activities and their plans for the future. Doc Joerg RG: Paulo, why do you love gin and what makes gin so special to you. Paulo Goncalves: I started to love Gin a year and a half ago. Before that I had tried it but was not so fascinated by it. Actually, my love for gin began in this bar because the bartenders here serve Gins and Gin and Tonics in a much different way. For me this was a real wow effect. It was an experience I cannot remember ever having before. It is even difficult to explain for me but here we make the things with love. Doc Joerg RG: Do you think Portuguese love gin more than other nations? Is gin already a national beverage? Paulo Goncalves: Gin could be a new business model in Portugal. Nowadays some people try to make Gin in Portugal – some more for business and others simply because they love gin. Portuguese people are very creative and if they see an opportunity they go for it. Doc Joerg RG: As we are a German food and bar magazine, there is an obvious question. When will be the Lisboa Gin and the Gin Lovers Gin be available in Germany? Paulo Goncalves: It is not the first time that I have been asked that question. A lot of people would like to have Gin Lovers gin in your country but also in France, UK and other European countries. I think this is possible and one day, it will happen. This year our company made a lot of changes, to progress, to expand and we researched the market. So, for the next year you can expect some surprises. Doc Joerg RG: And then in two to three years Gin Lovers will go global? Paulo Goncalves: Let’s see what happens. Doc Joerg RG: Since we know some German gin lovers and gin sales channels please feel free to ask also for our help – especially because your gin is exceptional and absolutely worth to be sold in Germany Paulo Goncalves: Ok, thanks a lot and yes some support would be much appreciated. But how do you know about Gin Lovers? Doc Joerg RG: As food and bar magazine we have been very active in the field of Gin for quite a while and we started following you on Instagram because you had some interesting posts and nice stories. In addition, you know even Aviation Gin, the company of Ryan Reynolds, is following you, so I thought what they can, we can even do better…with an exciting interview. We visited your bar three days ago and tried your gins …and we immediately fell in love. Doc Joerg RG: Principe Real (Royal Prince) has recently been declared the fifth coolest neighborhood in the world (from the Time Out magazine). How does this also affect you, I mean Gin Lovers and the beautiful bar we are in here? Paulo Goncalves: I think Principe Real is a very nice place, not Principe Real only but also this building with its unique character and this helped Gin Lovers to grow up too. So, the people come not only for the gin but also for this place because it’s so beautiful and unique. Doc Joerg RG: Gin Lovers are six partners. How do you decide what comes next and who is the decision maker? Paulo Goncalves: Yes, we are six partners and I am currently the CEO of the company. Because Carlos Alves is so busy and all partners want to make sure that we can grow in the future I was invited to join. Most decisions are taken by Juan Suarez and myself. All the partners of Gin Lovers have the same aim: to grow and to be successful, therefore they place their trust in us. So it is not so complicated. Doc Joe RG: Carlos, may I ask you about your background? Do you come from a food or beverage company? Paulo Goncalves: No, I have another company, which has nothing to do with gin or beverage. You know and sometimes it is good to bring some different perspectives and experiences in order to avoid the tunnel view. This can be beneficial for the people and the staff you are dealing with. Doc Joerg RG: What comes next? What can we expect from Gin Lovers in the next months and in 2019? Is there something you can already share with our readers and us? Paulo Goncalves: Next year we will try to open two more places in Portugal – likely one in Porto and another in Coimbra or around these cities. They have a lot of tourism and we know that the people who live there and the visitors coming to these cities like gin so we will try to make something happen in 2019. And of course we will try to create more events and parties to make more people aware of Gin Lovers.
